ACDF

The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) preserves, promotes and supports the country's cultural heritage, arts and contemporary culture. The Foundation works to strengthen the cultural ecosystem, foster the creative economy and create opportunities for professionals at local and international levels.

ACDF believes that culture plays a vital role in shaping society, connecting communities and advancing intercultural dialogue.

Among its key initiatives are the Centre for Contemporary Art in Tashkent (opening in 2026), the development of the new State Museum of Uzbekistan designed by Tadao Ando, and major international projects such as the Bukhara Biennial and the Aral Culture Summit.

Through exhibitions and collaborations with leading institutions worldwide — including the Louvre, the British Museum and the Uffizi Galleries — ACDF continues to amplify Uzbek culture on the global stage.

Why this exists

The Bukhara Biennial connects contemporary art with the living heritage of Bukhara. Across historic mosques, madrasas, and public spaces, artists and artisans from Uzbekistan and around the world create new dialogues between tradition and contemporary practice.

Gayane Umerova

Gayane Umerova

Gayane Umerova is dedicated to advancing Uzbekistan’s cultural sector and strengthening the role of arts and heritage in society. She serves as Head of the Department of Creative Economy and Tourism of the Administration of the President of Uzbekistan, Chairperson of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, and Chairperson of the 25th session of the UNESCO General Assembly.
 

Gayane Umerova leads key cultural initiatives, including the restoration of the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Tashkent, opening in September 2026, and the construction of the new National Museum of Uzbekistan, designed by Tadao Ando. She also commissioned the inaugural Bukhara Biennial, which welcomed over one and a half million visitors.

Advisory Board

The Bukhara Biennial has launched an Advisory Board to guide the development of the next edition. Made up of leading international figures from the fields of contemporary art, culture, and academia, the Board provides strategic guidance on the biennial's artistic vision, programme, and global engagement. By creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas and fostering meaningful institutional collaborations, the Advisory Board will help extend the scope and impact of the biennial, supporting its long-term development and international resonance. Drawing on expertise and multiple perspectives, the Advisory Board supports the biennial's mission to foster meaningful dialogue between contemporary artistic practice.

Alia Al-Senussi

Alia Al-Senussi

Alia Al-Senussi, PhD, is a leading member of the contemporary art world, with a special emphasis in her academic, personal and professional work on visual arts and culture in the Middle East, holding a doctorate degree in politics from SOAS which analyzed the nexus of soft power and cultural diplomacy in the context of networks of patronage.

Dr. Al-Senussi is a founding member of the Tate’s Acquisitions Committee for the Middle East and North Africa, the Board of 1:54 The African Art Fair, and the Middle East Circle of the Guggenheim. Amongst other positions, Dr Al-Senussi is Founding Co-Chair of the LACMA Global Ambassadors, Chair of the K11 International Council and a member of the Tate Modern Advisory Council, the board of the ICA London, the Serpentine Future Contemporaries and the Strategic Advisory Council of Delfina Foundation. Dr Al-Senussi is Senior Advisor, International Outreach and the VIP Representative for the United Kingdom, as well as the Middle East and North Africa, for Art Basel and a Senior Advisor to the Saudi Ministry of Culture focusing on work with the Diriyah Biennale Foundation.  Dr Al-Senussi is a visiting professor at VCU Qatar and is a regular lecturer at universities worldwide, such as St Andrews and Brown.

Alberto Cavalli

Alberto Cavalli

Alberto Cavalli is the Executive Director of the Michelangelo Foundation and General Director of Homo Faber Biennial, as well as General Director of Fondazione Cologni. Passionate about preserving master craftsmanship, he leads projects worldwide, from apprenticeships to exhibitions. A published researcher and educator, Alberto also teaches at Milan’s Creative Academy and Politecnico University.

Since 2016, Alberto Cavalli is Executive Director of the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship and General Director of the non-for-profit institution’s cultural event Homo Faber Biennial. He has been General Director of Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte since 2007. For both foundations, Alberto works tirelessly to value, celebrate and preserve master craftsmanship and share its beauty globally, through numerous projects, from apprenticeships to exhibitions, such as Doppia Firma and Mirabilia. His interest in fine craftsmanship has resulted in his co-curation of several publications: Mestieri d’arte e Made in Italy. Giacimenti culturali da riscoprire (2009), Artefici di bellezza (2013) and by Il Valore del mestiere (2014). It has also led him to research and stand as a visiting professor at the Creative Academy in Milan and to teach at Milan’s Polytechnic University. An advocate of handcrafted, authentic objects, Alberto is also a member of the Centre du Luxe et de la Création (Paris), of the Cultural Committee of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (Geneva) and is Vice President of the Noema Association for the promotion of musical culture (Milan). Alberto started his career in fashion working for a Milanese PR Agency, going on to join the Dolce & Gabbana International Press Office where he worked as Press Office Manager. Working in tandem as a researcher at the University and as a journalist, which resulted in his appointment as Lifestyle and Luxury Goods Correspondent at Vedomosti in 2007. Throughout his varied career, Alberto Cavalli has been impassioned by the fine craftsmanship behind luxury pieces, today he strives to make its recognition, a cultural and economic necessity.

Chris Dercon

Chris Dercon

Chris Dercon is a Belgium art historian, curator, and museum director born in Lier in Belgium in 1958. He studied at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden in History of Art, Theatre Research and Film Theory at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1988 he was appointed program director at the institute for contemporary Art PS1 New York where he worked until 1990. He was then appointed to his first directorship at the Witte de With center for contemporary art in Rotterdam recently renamed as the Melly Kunstinstitut, where he worked until 1995. 

From 1996 to 2003 he served as director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. From 2003 to 2011 he was the director of the Haus der Kunst in Munchen He was appointed director of the Tate Modern in 2011 where he stays till 2016. He was then appointed general director of the Volksbuhne Berlin from 2017 until 2018. From 2019 to 2023 he was the president of the Association of French National Museums-Grand Palais where he oversaw the renovation of the Grand Palais. He became Managing Director of the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in June of 2023. Chris Dercon worked in many occasions with architects, industrial designers and textile artists.

Michael Govan

Michael Govan

Michael Govan is the Chief Executive Officer and Wallis Annenberg Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). During his two-decade tenure, LACMA has doubled gallery space, programs, and annual attendance. In 2026, LACMA will open a state-of-the-art permanent collection building designed by Pritzker Prize–winner Peter Zumthor.

Aaron Cezar

Aaron Cezar

Aaron is the founding Director of Delfina Foundation, where he leads its renowned residency, exhibition, and public programmes. Over the past 15 years, he has transformed Delfina into a global hub for artistic exchange, building partnerships with major international institutions. He initiated innovative thematic programmes like Collecting as Practice, the first residency integrating artists and collectors.

In addition to his work at Delfina, Aaron has curated exhibitions and performances at institutions including Hayward Gallery Project Space, SongEun Artspace, ArtBo, and Art Dubai. He co-curated performances at the 58th Venice Biennale and frequently moderates panels at major art fairs like Art Basel, Frieze, and Art Brussels. His writing has appeared in The Art Newspaper, Harper’s Bazaar, and ArtAsiaPacific. He also co-edited Politics of Food, a book inspired by a Delfina programme.

Aaron advises institutions such as Asymmetry Art Foundation and Kunsthalle Praha and sits on boards and committees for initiatives like Dhaka Art Summit and Alserkal Avenue. He has served on numerous award juries, including the Turner Prize (2021) and Korea Art Prize (2023). Before Delfina, he held leadership roles at Metal and contributed to cultural initiatives for London 2012, among others.

Aya Al-Bakree

Aya Al-Bakree

Aya Al-Bakree, CEO, Diriyah Biennale Foundation


Aya Al-Bakree is a cultural leader and passionate advocate for the arts, driving creative transformation across Saudi Arabia. Since assuming her role as CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation (DBF) in 2021, chaired by HH Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, she oversees two alternating world-class biennales: the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale at JAX District in historic Diriyah, and the Islamic Arts Biennale at the iconic Western Hajj Terminal in Jeddah.

Among the projects under DBF are JAX District, Al Madar, and the AlMusalla Prize. JAX is a creative district that transformed an industrial heritage site into a hub for artists, galleries, and cultural institutions. Al Madar fosters global dialogue between institutions with significant Islamic art collections worldwide. The AlMusalla Prize is an international architecture competition reimagining modular, sustainable spaces for prayer. This breadth of experience across institutions, disciplines, and communities defines Aya's approach and her role within the global cultural landscape.

Dilyara Allakhverdova

Dilyara Allakhverdova

Dilyara Allakhverdova has a law degree from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Affairs. She is an art collector and patron of the arts. Dilyara co-founded the Contemporary City Foundation, a platform for young artists and curators, in Moscow in 2005

Since then, she has served as Board member of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and co-Chairman of Tate’s Russian and Eastern European Acquisitions Committee in London.

Dilyara was also Chairwoman of Art Night London in 2018. Currently, she is a Board Member of the Institute for Human Activities, a research project led by Dutch artist Renzo Martens. She is also a Council Member of the Georgetown University Art Galleries.
